LA ANTIGUA

La Antigua

Being an old historical locality of the state of Veracruz, located by the mouth of the River Huitzilapan or known as Rivers of the Hummingbirds, by which Hernán Cortes arrived at Mexico in 1519. Its name originated since the Villa Rich of the Vera Cruz was transferred to the Site currently known as La Antigua, to differentiate it from the New Vera Cruz. In this place are several historical symbols of great importance in Veracruz for the visitors among which is:

 

The House of Hernán Cortés: is considered the first building placed in America by the Spaniards; which only survives the walls, a canyon found in the Chalchihuecan beach, and some branches of the trees that crossed this building giving a very interesting aspect.

 

The Parroquia del Cristo del Buen Viaje: built in the middle of 19th century, where baptismal piles made by indigenous hands can be seen.

 

The Santa Anna Barracks: located one block behind the house of Cortes, where the stables of this character, which later became the barracks that Santa Anna occupied in antiquity, used as a military fortress and as a hospital for the Franciscan friars.

 

The Cabildo: being one of the first Spanish constructions in America in the year of 1523, being place of power during a brief but historical period in Century XVI.

 

Hermitage of the Rosario: ​​first church of America built between 1523 and 1524 by the Franciscan friars, which has in its atrium for the public's appreciation the 14 stations of the “Via Crucis" in the mosaics of “Talavera de la Reina” and a baptismal font carved by the Indians made of volcanic stone in one piece.

 

La Ceiba: the only tree that persists where Cortes is believed to tie his caravels. This place also has a great gastronomic variety thanks to River Los Colibríes that offers a great variety of seafood and fish with which they prepare a great variety of dishes being the Shrimp Enchipotlados one of the main. It also has a great visual appeal thanks to the extensive vegetation that counts the place, in addition to you can fish, swim or practice some sport such as rafting and kayaking on the River Huitzilapan.

Or simply climb the suspension bridge that is there which provides an excellent panoramic view of the place. In this place are also made various festivities and traditions, such as the carnival of the place which takes place in the month of March; Also the Santa Cruz is celebrated in the days of the 1 to 5 of May being day three of the most important for its great aquatic symbolism, of fertility and growth; Finally, the celebration of St. Francis of Assisi is celebrated on October 4, and the patronal feast is celebrated in honor of St. Francis of Assisi with a great variety of colors, music and dances.
