LEÓN GUANAJUATO
Located in the Bajio area of the country, the city of León in the state of Guanajuato will amaze you at every step. In this city everything is possible, from spending a morning watching balloons flying to crypts in the afternoon, buying the latest fashion in footwear and attend the opera season of MET NY or photograph the most avant-garde architecture.
Known as the Footwear Capital of the World, León is a city that combines masterfully the historical with the contemporary; Baroque and neoclassical architecture next to modern and dynamic buildings.
Begin your tour in the Martyrs square, or main square, full of shops and cafes. Head to the Municipal Palace to admire Jesús Gallardo's murals, which at night become the main stage of "Murales de Luz: la Máquina del Tiempo", a show of light and sound.
In the place of the Founders you will find the House of Culture Diego Rivera. Enter your deep red courtyard where you can see people weaving costumes, embroidering or making handmade products. If you are an art lover, visit the Sacred Art Museum located at the side of the Cathedral.
The Basilica Cathedral, dedicated to the Blessed Mother of Light, will surprise you. The interior is neoclassical in style, very bright, with a high dome and magnificent stained glass windows brought from Munich, Germany. Some of the most interesting places of the temple are in the side chapels. You cannot miss the chapel of Solitude, considered a masterpiece.
If you visit the city with your family, you will not want to miss the Explora Science Museum and Center, a space with themed rooms, temporary exhibitions and different experimental activities. Are you passionate about ecotourism? Enjoy an afternoon in the Metropolitan Park where you will find the ruins of an 18th century hacienda. You can do zip-lining, train or boat ride, cycle through the park or quad biking surrounded by pelicans, Canadian and wild ducks, herons, seagulls and more than 200 migratory and resident birds.
Do not leave Leon without having tasted the traditional macaroni, a stuffed pork crackling, which is the golden pork skin in butter inside a copper saucepan, accompanied by pickles, salsa, lemon and salt. Without doubt León is a great city to start or finish any trip through the state of Guanajuato.
